Many people in the over 60’s age bracket are keen to get up to date with technology. Some people in this age group are as IT literate as anyone else, having worked with computers for the last couple of decades. However, other people in this generation may never have come across a computer in their working life and be completely unfamiliar with IT.
By now you will have noticed that virtually everything can be done online. Shopping, watching television, listening to music, paying bills and finding information are just a few of the things that you can enjoy with ease with internet access.
Many over 60’s are concerned about missing out on the computer revolution. However, there are plenty of courses which explain how to use a computer in plain English without any industry jargon. These courses are designed for beginners and are very easy to follow.
In order to use the internet, a certain level of IT literacy is required. IT training is a great way to get to grips with how to use a computer and browse the internet. Many local councils offer community IT classes for older generations which teach a whole class full of people who are all at a similar level. There are also evening classes available at colleges which start from the very beginning. If you’re unsure where to start, take a look at the Age UK website for their recommended courses.
If you prefer to learn things are your own pace, there are plenty of options to train yourself the basics of using a computer. However, most of these resources require the use of the internet and a computer, so you need a basic grounding before teaching yourself. If you already have a basic grounding, you could look at the BBC Web Wise website or the learning resources section on the Age UK website.
Once you have got to grips with the basics of using a computer, you will find that browsing the web comes naturally to you. The Internet is basically a giant network of computers from around the globe that are all connected. With internet access there are endless possibilities. The internet allows you to find information on virtually anything in the world. It allows you to communicate for free with people on the other side of the planet. It also makes everyday tasks far more simple and convenient.
Online, there is a website for virtually anything you could think of. You can look at the weather forecast, book holidays, research your family tree, buy products, watch films, listen to music, read detailed maps and find out information on pretty much anything.
Communication is a big benefit of the website. You will have heard of social media websites like Facebook and Twitter which connect people together. If you’re not into that idea, you can communicate with friends and family over email where there is no limit to the amount of messages or photographs you send. You could also have video calls with friends and family anywhere in the world, completely free of charge.
